What is Bartholin’s Cyst?

There are two Bartholin’s glands situated on each side of the vaginal opening. They secrete fluid that lubricates the vagina. Sometimes the duct of these glands becomes obstructed and fluid backs up resulting in the formation of a cyst known as a Bartholin’s Cyst.

How common is this?

About two out of 10 women can expect to get a it at some point.  They are more common in women of reproductive age and the chance of them developing decreases after menopause.

What causes Bartholin’s cyst?

Medical Experts believe that the causes of a this can be due to following reasons: –

  2. Bacterial infections such as E. coli
  3. Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, or other sexually transmitted diseases (STIs).
  4. Injury, irritation of the vagina.

  • Swelling, tenderness, and pain near the vaginal opening
  • Discomfort and pain during intercourse, while walking or sitting.
